Minecraft Mobs

Our Minecraft mobs guide will tell you everything you need to know about the monsters and animals which inhabit Minecraft!

While most of Minecraft is to do with resource collection and building, you will encounter a wide selection of mobs in Minecraft. Some of these will be friendly, and others will be dangerous. The creeper in-particular is simply downright annoying. You will quickly learn how to avoid the mobs you do not want to deal with, and make your work places mob free, expect the occasional mishap though!

There are several ways to deal with the dangerous mobs, and as you progress you may even build a mob tower to automatically harvest mob drops. But for, now, lets go over the basics.

Passive Minecraft mobs will not attack you, but you might want to harvest some of them for what they provide!

Pigs

Pigs are usually fairly abundant in Minecraft, seemingly until you need them.  Killing a pig will usually provide you with one or two raw pork chop which will restore 1 1/2 health, or it can be cooked to give you a cooked pork chop, which will restore 4 health!

Sheep

Sheep are numerous around Minecraft, and provide Wool.  Wool comes in several grayscale shades, and brown in Minecraft V 1.4.  Wool can also be dyed various colors to give you the perfect material for creating artwork!  A little tip, with some dyes you can dye a sheep first, getting 1-3 dyed wool per dye, rather than just one! To get wool off a sheep you jsut have to hit it, not kill it.

Cows

Killing cows will give you leather, using a bucket on a cow will give you a bucket full of milk.

Leather can be used to create armor While Milk is used in cooking.

In Minecraft 1.4 wolves were released in to the game. These can be trained with bones, and healed with raw or cooked pork chops. You can check on your wolfs health by looking at it's tail (Up is healthy, down is low health).

Wolves will attack any mobs you engage in combat with (apart from Creepers) and follow you anywhere. If you go too far away they will spawn close by.

If you attack untamed wolves they will turn hostile.

There are several hostile Minecraft mobs, all of them have different attributes which yo must watch out for. You can stop mobs from spawning in an area by sufficiently lighting it with torches.

Creepers

Creepers are by far the most annoying hostile Minecraft mobs, if one gets too close to you it will explode, and they have a tendency to sneak up behind you while you are building a nice new building, destroying it all.  Fighting creepers is not always easy, but if your server has very little lag you will find that charging, hitting and then back-peddling tehn repeat is an effective technique.

Creepers drop Gunpowder which can be used to make TNT.

Spiders

Spiders can climb over walls. to prevent this you need to build either a roof or an overhang on your building!

Spiders drop string, which can be used to make a bow and arrow, or wool.

Skeletons

Skeletons are archers and can kill you from a distance. Defeat these guys by sidestepping to avoid the arrows.  Always be prepared to lose a heart or two when engaging these guys in combat though.

Skeletons drop arrows and bones.

Zombies

Zombies hit hard, i try to avoid engaging these guys in combat, since they only give feathers.

If you want to create arrows en-masse however, a good way to fight a zombie is to keep a block between you and it, that way it cannot reach you.
