Introduction to Hubpages Sucks
There have been a few websites run by ex hubpages users recently that have been saying that Hubpages sucks. I thought to myself, hang on a minute, I make over a grand a month on this website. How does Hubpages suck?
Now the community that say Hubpages sucks is as expected rather small, they may all say Hubpages sucks. But judging by their grammar, their overly promotional stories, and even one person who was upset and said Hubpages sucks because he copied content off of a website, and was unpublished for duplicate content, maybe they deserved it.
Of course, I saw this as leaving me with only one option, I decided that I should inform all the people searching for information on Hubpages about just how good the program is. Not only am I going to tell them about how good Hubpages is, I am going to prove it by beating all the naysayers in the Google rankings for the keyword Hubpages sucks to make sure this is the top of the best article directories!
So don't listen to those who say Hubpages Sucks. If they want to Prove Hubpages Sucks, then maybe they should try and contradict what I say below!
Why Trust Me?
Why should you believe me when I say that I am right, and those people who say Hubpages sucks are wrong?
Well if the text to the left is not enough, I am one of many Hubbers who earn my daily living with the help of Hubpages. With Hubpages alone I earn over $1000 each month, supplimented by my other websites to earn a reasonable wage. After nearly a decade working in the SEO and web management field, I feel as if I can accurately talk about online article submission sites, and I can safely say Hubpages is one of the best!
This flies in the face of those who say Hubpages sucks, becaues they didn't want to put the effort in!
So Why Do People Say Hubpages Sucks (And Why Should I Not Be Worried?)
There are several Hubpages sucks arguments you see time and time again from people who say Hubpages sucks These people tend to be speaking out of personal vendetta, saying Hubpages sucks for reasons that are more or less their own fault. Let me list some of the reasons people say Hubpages sucks, and more importantly, why they are wrong!
Complaint - Hubpages sucks because they take your money/a percentage of your money and they do nothing!
The Reason - Hubpages does take a percentage, but they make it incredibly easy to insert adverts and sales modules, not to mention how their system really does help your page get to the top of Google for your Keywords!
Complaint - Hubpages sucks because you are meant to make money on their website and I did not.
The Reason - Hubpages does not pay you money, the advertisers (Adsense, Amazon, eBay, Kontera) pay you. That means that if you are not making any money off of Hubpages with these affiliate programs, you are unlikely to make money anywhere.
Complaint - Hubpages sucks because my hub was flagged as overly promotional!
The Reason - Hubpages, like any other website has to worry about spam articles devaluing the rest of the website. Hubpages will not let you just join up, write an article about your own website or some affiliate product in sales speech, and then past a load of affiliate links. Instead try providing information, with just one link back to your own website.
Complaint - Hubpages sucks because they flagged my site for duplicate content, but why should I write unique content when they do not pay me?
Reason - Hubpages might not pay you, but the with good quality unique content the advertisers will. Try asking yourself why you think duplicating your own content, or stealing from others, will bring you any profit, since duplicated content does not work well in Google. Instead write your own unique content to give you search engine success with Hubpages!
Complaint -Hubpages sucks because the forum is full of clubs, people who band together, trolls, people who are ignorant, etc.
Reason - Yes the forum has some specific groups of friends, and like any group of friends you are not just going to walk in to any of them uninvited. But remember the Hubpages forum has thousands of users and you can find people who share your interests. Also BE WARNED, there are people who will also disagree with you, even about your deeply held beliefs if you are religious. If you feel as if you are offended by anything in the forums, no one is making you post or read the forum. You can still make a lot of money, even if you avoid the forums altogether.
However I personally find most of the forum content is enjoyable, and useful!
Complaint - My Hub has been flagged as substandard, I feel insulted, therefore Hubpages sucks!
Reason - Don't feel insulted, and definately don't think Hubpages sucks because of this,it's an automated system! Try cleaning up the grammar, increasing the word count, and picking up your SEO practices. Hubpages will flag your Hub as substandard for the exact same reasons that Google will. If your writing doesn't pass the Hubpages standard, chances are it won't rank well in Google either!

In the weeks post publishing this Hub I will follow a few of my normal techniques to increase this Hubs position in the SERPs for the keywords Hubpages Sucks. If however you feel that I am WRONG and that Hubpages sucks, then feel free to create your own website/blog/lens/whatever to beat me to the top of the Google Rankings for Hubpages Sucks.
If you beat me through your normal marketing means, maybe Hubpages Sucks, but if you have to expend additional effort, buy a domain, spend money, all just to make a website that beats my hub about how Hubpages sucks, when I have managed to do it for the same keywords on a Hub that promotes Hubpages, well, maybe you need to rethink the Hubpages sucks argument!.
So can I make money on Hubpages?
The simple answer is 'maybe'. A lot of people who say Hubpages sucks are the exact same people who did not want to put the time or effort in to Hubpages to get the results. The truth is that with any technique to make money online, you will have to put in a lot of hard work. There will always be someone willing to work a little bit harder than you for the same keywords!
Despite those who say Hubpages sucks, I find that Hubpages is an amazing simple way to publish content online, and integrate Amazon/eBay adverts quickly and efficiently. Sorting an ad layout in Hubpages takes seconds, and with some of my ad layouts, the same thing would have taken hours on my own websites. Those who say Hubpages sucks should definitely thing about this!
There are those that say Hubpages sucks because it takes out 40% of your profits, but lets face it, for the time it saves, not to mention the exposure you get, Hubpages is one of the easiest ways to make money online, and you can sign up right here!
Can I Get Free Backlinks on Hubpages
I see this question a lot, and before I started making money with Hubpages, it was the reason I joined!
Those that say Hubpages Sucks because their backlinks were no follow, tend to be the people who tried to abuse Hubpages, thinking it was just another spam filled article directory such as eZine. However those who say Hubpages sucks do not seem to realise that in truth, Hubpages is more about quality, and that is what gives it it's high Google ranking and fast Google indexing!
The Conclusion to Hubpages Sucks
Those who say Hubpages sucks can feel free to try and prove me wrong. Infact if tehy can beat me for the Keyphrase Hubpages sucks I would like to know how they do it. As I work on promoting the keyphrase Hubpages sucks I will be doing nothing less than normal, however i am confident that it will not take long for me to get my Hubpages Sucks page to the top of Google for the words Hubpages Sucks!

Good points and all valid, as far as I can tell by my time here. Of course, I do not write here for the money but am surprised when I make some. I do very little backlinking nor keyword searches but still find some of my hubs on the first page of Google.

Good Hub, Oli! Every now and then, I Google for scam reports on another site where I used to write. I never thought to search for "HubPages scam" because, having been here two years, I know it isn't a scam and couldn't imagine anyone getting that impression. I'm surprised to find there are disgruntled people out there - usually because they were too impatient to find their way around the site before writing their Hubs.

It is also not a site of much interest to traditionally published authors--and may even be of detriment to their careers.
This hub contains no malice towards any authors in particular, infact the whole point of this page is to provide support for Hubpages, and rather than Malice, it is offering a way for others to prove their point.
There are a few published authors on Hubpages, plenty of which write both their own books and in print media. How do you claim that Hubpages can be a detriment to a person's career?
traditionally published authors is an interesting term, especially with the new wave of published blogs, self publication and internet based publishers.
Very well done, the unifying thread among most of those claiming that "hubPages Sucks" seems to be illiteracy, or at least a complete lack of desire to learn anything about the online publishing world, you have provided some very useful information for the poor schmucks!

Good job, y'all! I went and did a quick check for your main Keywords and this hub, and a few others from this site are already ranking high in the major Search Engines. That was quick! Anyway, at the moment, this particular page ranked #1 in Yahoo! for "HubPages Sucks."
This was a great notion; maybe it will help shed more truth to the newbies - about HubPages, as opposed to getting advice from the angry haters out there.

I do own and run several web sites of my own. Why would I create content here for only a 60% cut when I could publish to my own domains and keep 100%? I asked myself this when I joined. There had to be some good reasons, otherwise I could just keep it all on my own.
For one my web page designs tend to suck. I'm rather CSS challenged. On HubPages I can focus on the content and not worry about how it will look. HP uses a nice proven layout that just works.
Another big reason is that HubPages pulls major authority weight in Google so it takes me much less work to rank well for my keywords. Being the 89th biggest web site online, HP helps us all out a lot. I have literally seen my content here indexed in Google 15 minutes later! And maybe the biggest reason of all is this is a community that helps each other out by teaching and sharing knowledge.
Oh yes HubPages sucks because they only give me 60% while they provide the hosting, bandwidth and technical support which comes with major authority in Google and Yahoo. Please, give me a break.
I bet not one of these losers who complain would have a clue how to setup a web site, write HTML, CSS, Javascript, Ajax, PHP and MySQL. Much less pull off a #1 on Google all on their own. While I do know all of these things, I still choose to publish here for reasons stated.

I really like Hub pages, and they are not that strict, they don't penalize you for every misspelled word, or grammatical error like my English teachers back in high school did. With their editing tools, its easy to go back and correct your work, if you do find errors. I'm glad you wrote this. Keep up the good work.

Yeah, HubPages is good, but it sucks to get banned on forums for speaking your mind! A 'forum' = a 'discussion'...but it is not right for some candy-coated-daisy and/or pseudo-intellectual with aimless intentions, to flag people for having a stronger mind than their own. As for HubPages, this is the only thing thus far that I have truly found to "suck" in a dictionary-sense...as it sucks the brains out of the ones who combat the brainless ones! The bad thing about your keywords (HubPages Sucks), is that only people who have been to HubPages or already knows about HubPages would even type the query that involves 'sucks' with this domain! ;)

I don't think there is much wrong with Hub pages but nevertheless I think I should be making a lot more than the few measly dollars I have made over 14 months, obviously I am not Ms. popularity, but thus far I live with it.

Hubpages is a business site for the owners. They are not a charitable organization. They, as every business, get their cut off from Google.
Where is the harm? How do they suck? We have a genuine partnership with Hubpages. Like any other business partnerships where both the partners have some obligations to fulfill, the publishers have to fulfill their obligations. Hubpages is generally right in their part.
We do not know how much percentage of an advertisement Google pays us. It is assumed that they pay about 25 percent on an average. Do they suck?

From what I have heard estimates are around 60% to 70% from Google as an adsense commission, although no-one really knows apart from the Google bods, even the people I know in Google wont tell me whats up :(

Fun Hub, and you have put together a good list of reasons why Hubpages is good.
We have our own website, and are near the top of search engines for our website title. We get to keep all the money (not that it is much) from our own site. BUT - we are limited to topics that are relevant to that site. We have tried adding new topics, but they don't get read. So we use Hubpages to write about other ideas that interest us, and sometimes earn a little money from tha.
Hubpages is a quick way to publish. Our own website requires a lot more time to put together a page. So we use Hubpages for experiments.
Sometimes we feel a topic has not worked on our website, but it seems a shame to waste the work. In that case we revamp the article for Hubpages. WE have learned from experience that articles need a slightly different slant to work well on Hubpages.
We have learned a lot from Hubpages, and from other Hubbers.
WE have found most Hubbers to be very helpful.
Generally we don't like the forums, but that is not a problem as we simply ignore them.

I doubt anyone will pick up that gauntlet - simply because I can't see them understand the basics of how to drive web traffic to anything they write! The sad part is, there are so many great writers who seem to think they are the last word when it comes to the written word. So it goes beyond the ones who duplicate content or can't write. I don't think most of them have graduated beyond the age of print so one wonders why they don't just stick to it - unless they are willing to see HP as a hobby where they write just what they like. I do - and even though I just write what I feel like, thanks to HP, the traffic's actually taking off!
A grand per month is pretty good! How could that suck? I have had my problems here but overall I still find it the best place to write online and make money with adsense. Not to mention its a great place to get hi pr links to your sites.
I always think it's humorous when people complain about things like you mentioned (HubPages taking 40% of revenue). What's the big deal? HubPages is basically being nice enough to allow these disgruntled people to store their grammatically slaughtered writings on their website, and they want to complain about not receiving 100% revenue.

On Hubpages you can have it both ways! You can write just for a Hobby or you can commercialise just about all you like and make a nice buck. What more could you want?
Oh yeah I forgot, you do have to put the work in LOL
To expand on what agvulpes, above, said; you can even do both at the same time, not put in much effort, and still make pretty good money that amounts to, say, a part-time job income. I earn more on here than I do on other sites that operate similarly (or sort of similarly).
Besides the points mentioned in this Hub, I like the way things operate here. HubPages tells people what earns the most and what has to be done to increase earnings; but writers are left on their own to choose to write whatever it is they want to write.
Contrary to what many people think, Hubs don't have to be about commercial products in order to earn anything. Just as HubPages tells new writers, helpful/useful Hubs can earn (even without mention of products or buying anything).
As far as the forums go, I spent quite a bit of time using the forums as a way to take a break from work; and I never heard from HubPages. All anyone asks is that you don't use "bad words" and don't attack people; so if you don't do that you don't hear from anyone. Most of the time, most people were either "great" or "neutral". I've gotten into two or three "agree-to-disagree" things on there; and once (oopsie) I was trying to be kind of funny/"clever" and a lot of people misinterpreted my motives and were offended. If something like that happens you just deal with like a grown-up and as best you can, explain if you're in the mood to, and maybe stay away from the forums for awhile (misunderstandings are more likely to go on, the more time you spend there, and laugh off the rare nasty e.mail. None of it's anything anyone has to lose sleep over.
HubPages (at least in my opinion, as well as a lot of others') is a really nice site where people really can earn a decent-enough monthly income. It's easier to get traffic to the "right kind" of writing here, especially for the person who isn't interested in putting in a lot of work getting traffic. I have some stuff on here that wouldn't be earning any more anywhere else. There's a business deal between writers and HubPages, so I can't see begrudging HubPages for getting its share of earnings. Everyone has his right to his opinions about his own experience, of course. My opinion of HubPages is a very favorable one.
Haha yeah the forums can be a minefield, when Iwas writing this hubpages sucks page I was tempted to go in to the forums in a bit more detail!

heh just noticed that this hubpages sucks hub has dropped from the first page of Google for Hubpages sucks, So I did an SEO audit to figure out why, and it seems the sheer number of comments which don't mention Hubpages Sucks has dropped the keyword proportion to around 5% for Hubpages Sucks when it used to be 4.5%. This is why Hubapges Sucks might be appearing excessively in this comment on my Hubpages sucks page :P

I don't think it does much good to throw around insults or accusations that hubpages "sucks". But I do think that there are some legitimate concerns about hupages.

My criticisms are not at all mentioned or addressed on this page. They are due to the fact that Hubpages is rather secretive (in my opinion, to the point of being dishonest by "not telling the whole truth") about their policies, including hubscore and use of rel="nofollow".
Do check out my criticism and let me know if you think it is legitimate or not.
Hubpages is very upfront about their nofollow policies, if you read what they say they clearly state that if a Hub author does not have an easy to gain score of 75, or if an individual hub score is less than 40 (Very hard to create a hub which scores that low) then any outbound links will be nofollow.
There is no secrecy, it just helps weed out people who are using Hubpages to spam links.
Despite what your site says, this is mentioned in the FAQ.
Yes hubpages does take a 60% cut, but you can also use your own affiliate links where you receive 100% of the earnings.
I personally gladly give up the 40% for the ease of use of inserting amazon and eBay modules in to a structured layout.
And when it comes to traffic, I receive a huge amount of traffic for much less work than on my personal websites. I have less than 200 hubs, and yet my blogs with over 300 posts each pull in less daily traffic than my combined hubs. Even better the traffic rarely becomes stale, and tends to increase over time, rather than decrease, thanks to updates from other users which can being in fresh avenues for web spiders to explore my work.
While I do appreciate your views (I actually came to hubpages, wrote a few hubs linking back to my site and then left, only coming back 8 months later to explore some erroneous adsense earnings) I do think you should give Hubpages a much bigger shot than you actually did.
Well as they say, each man to his own. I have not made a dime but that is not hubpages fault, its mine, I don't know what I am doing.

Actually, hubpages DOES suck. Some guy blasted my account with backlinks from profiles and I got my account banned. I wrote to hubpages and never heard back. Thank you hubpages. Thanks for making it so easy for some angry competitor to get rid of his competition by simply linking to your hubs.

Nah, HubPages doesn't suck. I don't make a cent, but still, I continue to write here. It's not HubPages fault that I don't make any money though - I have nothing to advertise, nothing to sell at present, and no real wish to write about stuff that doesn't interest me. I suppose I could work hard and make money if I really wanted to (I suppose I could, though I have not the foggiest idea how that's actually done!), but that's not why I'm here.
Good hub, very positive. I wonder why I never saw it before today though!

This is a great Hub! I'm with you, Hubpages has one of the Best models I've seen.
Wow, very interesting hub. I don't know how I could've missed this one. To be honest, I think it takes a lot of talent and skill to succeed on this site, and I can definitely tell that you're one of them based on what you've written here. Unfortunately, I'm not one of these people, even though I have had followers tell me otherwise. lol. Of course, I have a tendency to be my own worst critic, so that's another story that I won't bother to bore you with. However, I think you do make a lot of good points, and I think it's great that you made this hub.
As much as I see people complain on here, it always seems like these same people that do are the EXACT same people that kiss the staff's butts the instant there's a new feature and/or they announce good news. Yet, they condemn them openly when even the slightest thing goes wrong.
Personally, it just makes me sick sometimes. Then again, that's just me. Anyway, good hub.
Another brilliant hub, Oli, that gets my vote upwards! I can certainly see why you do so well here and elsewhere! I personally have found this to be the best site for publishing my articles on so I disagree with those that say HubPages sucks anyway!
